Mudansha Instructors

As part of a student’s aikido training and advancement, students are required to assist in kohai instruction.  Mudansha is anyone below the rank of shodan (first black belt). This time spent instructing offers the student the opportunity to build a stronger foundation while gaining the experience and confidence needed to conduct regular classes.

Jerry Poole received most of his martial training playing NCAA Division I football in the early 1980’s. He has always been fascinated by the aesthetic and effectiveness of Aikido. It was only recently that he was able to turn that fascination into reality by training at Asahi. He feels very fortunate to have the opportunity to train with and learn from Mike Sensei and Pam Sensei. He has trained at Asahi Dojo for more than three years and has successfully tested at the level of 2nd Kyu.

Cheri Poole - Children’s Instructor
Cheri has been studying aikido under the direction of Aloia Sensei for 3 years. Having had no previous martial art experience, Cheri finds the art of Aikido both empowering and challenging. She embraces the fluidity of the movements and finds herself continually striving to learn from those around her. Cheri spends her time outside the dojo working in various volunteer capacities and being a full time wife and mother to three boys, all of whom study at Asahikan. Cheri is 2nd kyu.

Bill Boyd - Children’s Instructor
Bill
has been training in the martial arts for 6 years. Bill enjoys the mental discipline involved in studying Aikido and believes that it provides a deeper understanding of one’s self as well as providing a study of motion.   Bill also enjoys the physical challenges that ukemi presents. Bill has studied at Asahi about 3 years and has successfully tested for 3rd kyu.  He also holds yudansha ranking in Tae Kwon Do. Bill has worked with children of various ages in church sponsored groups as well as teaching the children’s classes in Tae Kwon do and now Aikido.   Bill enjoys working with the children classes because they often look at things with a different, refreshing viewpoint as well as being honest in their reactions.

Travis Manning - Aikido has helped Travis realize the importance of feeling the uke and his/her energy, and learning how the body moves and reacts.  Aikido has taught him the great importance of timing and staying relaxed. Aikido has sharpened everything he is as a martial artist.  Even though he has been studying aikido for four years, everything still feels new and challenging. Travis is very thankful for meeting and being able to train under Mike and Pam Sensei and is grateful for the new friends he has made at Asahikan Dojo.

“A pebble cast into a pond creates ripples.  Aikido is the pebble. We are the ripples.
