Advancement in the art is achieved through periodical testing of techniques. A colored emblem/belt system is employed to distinguish different levels. 
Class attendance, proficiency and attitude play a major role in advancement.

Students will be required to join the Aikido Association of North America under Yukio Utada Sensei.  This demonstrates a dedication to pursue the art and enables advancement recognition. The AANA is recognized by the International Yoshinkan Aikido Federation (IYAF).

Students are also required to purchase their own weapons: bokken, jo staff and tanto.
